Do I need to see my doctor before starting physical therapy?

A physician's diagnosis is not required for your therapist to perform a complete musculoskeletal evaluation. However, in Illinois, a physician's diagnosis is required before initiating physical therapy treatment and many insurance companies will require that medical necessity be established prior to covering physical therapy treatment. If you have not already discussed this problem with your doctor, begin by telephoning him or her to determine how to proceed. If you do not have a personal physician, we are able to recommend several doctors with whom we work regularly.
